Instead of being the 'miracle worker genius' that Scotty and Laforge were, he was resourceful, and had to try really hard to keep things going. He was the 'everyman' - the Dan Connor of Star Trek.

O'Brien had some great episodes, especially focusing on how life just kept shitting on him. Badda-bing, Badda-bang and again in What You Leave Behind He's a bit boring, and the only real growth he does is when he goes into Vic's bar accepting that it's not really about the time, the location, or how people were treated during the fake time, it's about moving past it and enjoying time with your friends. He's the captain, he started as a commander.

Garak, consistently interesting, he has secrets, he has back story, he has a continually evolving character, and he is the focus of one of the best DS9 episodes In the pale moonlight (above).

Statistical Probabilities is easily my favourite episode with him.

Bashir, the first of the actually interesting characters, He was not your usual Doctor, he had a past, he had stories, and while he was a doctor, he had his secrets.

He's a cool character, and Armin Shimerman did an amazing job with him, but almost every episode with him in it was either him complaining about clothed women, or him trying to make money.

Odo, standard faire 'emotionless' security guy with a massive chip on his shoulder (Quark), While Rene Auberjonois did an amazing job with him later on, Odo for the first 4 seasons was flat, and obsessed with Quark, and thus boring.

Ezre, perky annoying 'TnA' taking the place of a smart nerdy character, and replacing her with a perky counsellor.

Jadzia was good, but basically a sort of generic 'I'm smart' character, who was eventually turned into Ezre.

Kira was tough because she had to be, and had to constantly remind the audience that she was bad ass, constantly making her seem petty and annoying.

Obrien and Keiko seemed forced, and awkward at best, and had the same problems at the end of the series as they did at the beginning, the only change was Keiko becoming a teacher.

The issue was that a lot of the actors in DS9 just never clicked with their characters, so a lot of things seemed. I can only really think of one that emotes the same fascination, satisfaction, and intrigue as this in DS9, In the Pale Moonlight I can count a dozen or so incredibly well written episodes that took place entirely on the ship, this one, drumhead, and quite a few others.
